The Little League Team that could (sorta)

SportsBoy’s LL team started out strong, winnign the first half of the regular season with a game to spare and earning a spot in the post season playoff which began this week. Unfortunately, the second half of the regular season has not gone as well. The bats died. Then the injury bug took a huge bite out the team. Thanks to an ankle rolling last week, they were down to 9 active players for Game 1 of the playoffs Tuesday night. 2 of the 4 co-captains (SB is one) were out. The parents were joking as we looked at a dugout with foot boots and arms casts that our team should have been sponsored by an orthopedic practice! These injuries are what has put SB on the mound and also given the chance to catch. The latter part he loves, the former? Well, he loves it but is not quite as good at it 😉 The other problem is with he and the other captain relegated to pitching and/or catching, that leaves the less experienced kids as fielders. And..well..they are less experienced! Now, even totally healthy, they are playing a much better team, no doubt. Still, they could win a game here and there in a series (I think), but only full strength. Tuesday night they lost 9-3 and as the coach said, only 3 of the runs given up were earned (3 home runs). But, that’s the challenge – they have a much higher number of sluggers on their team than any other line up by far. And their pitching is so deep. Still, I was impressed with our team’s heart. Nine players, and then part way through one of our three pitchers tweaks his knee running out a ground ball! We were staring at a forfeit at that point and I know the team would rather lose out right than have to give up. Well, he was crying, and the umpire and opponents kindly gave him time to settle down, but darn it he buckled down and went abck out on the mound for another inning. Way to go!

Tonight we get one of the injured captains back (we hope).  Maybe they can pull off one vicotry against this team? They’ve lost all three regular season and now the 1st playoff game. If they want to play on Saturday, they have to win tonight. If not, well, they are sure learning about teamwork and stepping into new roles when the team needs it! Character building, right?

Have you ever had one of those days? (with catcher pics)

You know – a Friday after a long assed week of tying to juggle more balls than one human should – and you are sitting at your desk at work right after lunch and thinking “I am done!” But you can’t mentally check out just YET because it’s the 15th which is a deadline day and you really really need to buckle down. I mean, bad enough that there’s a task that is pretty dang complicated and tests all your powers of concentration (IOW, no ADD like flipping through tabs on your web browser!) and takes at least 2-3 hours but to have it hit on a Friday on a week like this? When the morning was eaten up with administrative spot fires? Yep, that was today for me.  By the time I did lift my head up to see what was going on around me, nearly everyone in my area was GONE. So I seethed with jealousy of course! I was a Good Girl and stayed until 5pm, but man it was hard!

Thankfully yesterday was pretty dang productive and I got a lot of nagging tasks off my to do list so I think once I get past tomorrow’s usual saturday mania of working out and little league and a nail appt and taking MM to and fro, Sunday should be blissfully free.

And now, your promised photos of a newly minted catcher:

After a lazy morning, we got to the field for LL game warm ups at 10:45. I got my walk in for the day – 40mins worth by making one lap around the fields and then going around the entire neighborhood block which is pretty darn big and very very hilly so it was a goood walk. Now that I have been walking more, I am no longer feeling so sore after which is an improvement over a couple of weeks ago! The team won again 7-6 after falling behind 6-1 making for a very exciting game. Weird thing was – it was COLD at the field. Sun never really came out and the wind from the ocean is quite bracing. Still, my plan was to clean up the weeds and one dead bush in the side yard beds so I bundled up and went to work after lunch. And…then the sun came out! Blazing. Which was actually kinda nice. I finished up and then sat out back and read for awhile. Sportsboy had come home and hit the books to finish 2 of 4 subjects and was reading quietly inside. On his own. Do you know the boy who took almost a full year to read the first three Harry Potter books has now finished books 4-6? He started book 6 just a week ago.  He kept on marvelling at how fast I went through them, but I told him it was just practice. I think he gets it now 🙂 The challenge will be what to get him into when he is done with HP.

How about you dear reader? Any signs of spring around you?

Black and White no hitter

The last two days were a combination of American Idol and another LL game – hence the title.

adam_mj-week

I am officially an Adam fangirl. He blew me away with his rendition of Michael Jackson’s Black & White. I’ve re-watched it on my DVR 3 times. I know it is all a matter of taste, but he works for me. Much like I prefered Clay over Ruben in Season 2 and Bo vs Carrie in Season 3 and Daughtry vs everyone that season and Cooke vs Archuletta last year. The early pick by the judges – and by all internet accounts, but the fans too – is that this will shape up to be Adam vs Danny at the end. I figure seeing those two perform for 10 more weeks would be the best this season can offer, hands down. If not for Adam, Danny probably would be my favorite. But as you can tell, I like singers with a more of an *edge*. Danny is wonderful – and safe. Like Archuletta last year. Adam is going to push envelopes.

Rounding out the top 4 I think will be Allison – the one girl with *edgy* written all over her – and Alexis. Lil is a wild card to make it there, but I suspect that her own sort of bland, safe hyper-polished presentation will cause her to fall short. And I think as long as she makes the top 5 that the judges would not ‘save’ her. Oooh – speaking of the save thing – love it! In fact, those 5 I mentioned are the ONLY ones I think they would use it on. If either of them for some reason ends up with the lowest # of votes anytime before Top 5, they will use the Save on them.

The Little League Cardinals bounced back from Saturday’s first loss with a come from behind last inning victory last night. A 4-1 victory that was a pitching masterpeice.  The other team went up 1-0 on a walk and then some throwing errors. IOW – no balls hit into the field. In fact, for 6 full innings the Cardinals two pitchers not only did not allow a single hit, they struck out 17 of the 18 batters they faced! The final out was a fly ball to center field and that was the FIRST out made in the field! Our first pitcher went 4 2/3 innings when pitch count forced him out, but he had dominated with a well located blazing fastball. It’s so awesome to see him pitching so well because those first two seasons with the bad coach he had been nearly stripped of his confidence. That guy would only let him pitch if we were up by 10 runs! In the ultimate payback, now he is our #1 pitcher often coming in as a closer but sometimes carrying the load as the starter. Meanwhile one of the majors level rookies came in after him to hold the other team in the bottom of the 6th after the Cardinals had some clutch hitting to push across the go ahead runs in the top half. My boy redeemed himself after two first pitch outs in the earlier innings with a two out base hit that drove home the go ahead run.

And that, is the last 48 hours in a Black and White no hitter nutshell 🙂

Are you flashing back to the 80s? Coolio!

When did Daylight Savings Time start so dang early? Ok, I think I am vaguely aware that they changed it up, but really, this was EARLY! Thanks be to twitterland I was not caught unawares but really, I also had NO CLUE until Saturday that it was Spring Forward day. That coulda been disastrous since we had registration day on Sunday. Oooh – which sends me flashbacks to when I forgot a Spring Forward and then had to work a Sunday graduation for NU way back in the day and I was an hour late reporting for my shift! GAH!

Of course, it’s not like you really need to DO anything anymore. As MusicMan responded when I warned him we needed to change the clocks “Uh, what clocks actually NEED changing at this point?” As it turned out, just my watch and the clocks on the microwave and stove. Everything else just does it automatically!

Saw this really cool bird at the Torrey Pines Lagoon on my way in to work today. The drop in there during migration periods and there was a pretty good sized flock floating around:

SportsBoy’s LL team had its first loss Saturday. Still a very good game and SB had 3 hits including another rather booming double. Dare we consider the little guy can push one over the fence this year? That’s twice now in the first 4 games when he got one within a foot of it for sure. I think he’s the last of his travel ball team peers to be a home run virgin 🙂

There were no further toilet paper roll attacks this weekend.

The house did get cleaned – just not by me (which is, as always, a bonus!)

I didn’t have to kill anyone at registration yesterday (which is, as always, another bonus!!). Wasn’t sure if that would be the case given some of the rather err..stunningly obtuse questions sent out way during the week, but things went off without any trouble.

I did have to unwind with a beer and pizza – oh man that tasted so good!

So what did you do this weekend?

Weekend Open Thread – let me live vicariously through you?

Here’s my weekend:

00000113917-2ndstorysoftwaretaxactdeluxeedition2005-largebaseball

Sports Boy has Little League opening ceremonies, then a LL game tomorrow and then a double header on Sunday with his travel ball team. In between all of that, I will be preparing tax returns for SweetPrince and his family. Now, of course I love baseball so that part is not terribly excruciating, but what I am describing here is not exactly weekend fun and relaxation.  Not by a long shot.

So please, while I labor with rental receipts and try to keep my digits from getting numb while watching the games, please, entertain me! Tell me what YOU are doing. It has to be more fun 🙂

(A positive side of the baseball is that I promise to take photos and post them in here to change up the theme in here for March. ‘Cause yeah, February really, finally, is ending!)

I’m gonna make you hip!

Standard

Seriously – those of you with kids, you may begin kissing my feet now. Unless of course you already knew about this dope site that  I will share with you which will make you not just hip, but also badass, gnarly, phat, wicked and yes, even awesome. All synonyms for “hip” and described in the Urban Dictionary. Go there. Learn the language of not only those kids these days, but also learn how to speak Twitter. Well, twitter was originally chat speak I suppose. When you are trying to drop pithy thoughts in 140 characters or less you really have to use the abbreviated lingo. ROTFL. BRB. FTW. FTR. For The Record, I found the Urban Dictionary site because I needed to get a definition of FTW (For The Win!) because I had seen it used on Twitter enough to drive me insane and had to know what it meant. So the next time you feel as if another language is being spoken or writter, go there for a translation. If not, you might find yourself off the box 🙂

Also, keeping things current here, I am not doing the full on American Idol wrap up posts like I did last year due to lack of time or passion for the task, BUT, I am watching and just want to highlight two singers from last night:

Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta:

idol-adam-lambert

allison-iraheta

They sang last night and really stood out to me. Even more so than anyone who sang last week (even the 3 who moved on to the next round). They are unique and immesely talented performers. Allison is just 16!! I’m really hoping they move on this week.

See? Now even if you don’t watch you know who two of the stand outs are in this still very popular TV show so you wont seem totally clueless 🙂

********************************************************************

From my tweets yesterday you probably saw that Little League games started (and that my toes were numbed from the cold cold tundra that is the school field where they played). In one of the understatements of the century, things are way better this season without Coach Passive/Aggressive/Narcissist. Sadly, he moved up to No Cal. (get the sarcasm there?) if he hadn’t moved I am fully convinced that we would have had to put up with him again because the LL board was stubbornly standing by him. GAH! Anyway, all water under the bridge and now there are good times for the team. A great coaching staff of truly good guys and what looks to be a fun team of mostly younger kids, but with a lot of spunk. They won 6-2 yesterday and I need to brag a bit. SportsBoy was playing his favorite position – 2nd base – and made an eye popping play! Like most parents I am normally harder on him when talking about his relative talents in the sports he plays, but one thing I know he has in spades is an enormous lack of fear. He will willingly try anything phsyically possible to make a play. Yesterday it was  a diving stab of a hard hit ground ball that probably should have bounced through to the outfield but he snatched it and THEN, with his momentum carrying him away from 1st base, he reached *behind his back* with his throwing hand to get the ball out of his glove and then whirled to fire a strike to first and get the out. A total ESPN highlight play. And that is his style. Drama all the way. He’s one of those kids who gives you heart attacks but then comes through with the Big Play when you need it. Which of course makes him a ton of fun to watch!
