Still dry

Everywhere I look on the web once you get past the Iowa results, is some huge story about the storms hitting California. I know that the northern part has been getting hit since last night. The NU San Jose campus had to close today entirely due to the power outages caused by the wind. Meanwhile, not a spit of rain here 🙂 Not that I don’t want any. We always need the rain here and it means I can turn off my sprinklers again for awhile 🙂 I am just not pleased with the timing. Sportsboy should be playing in a baseball tournament and I need to take down the outside decorations. Even though nothing has started here yet, it still seems fairly certain that tomorrow will be wet.

Update: As of 9:30pm the wind is now howling and swirling and rain has been coming down in San Clemente enough to cancel SB’s tournament. I expect the wet stuff should arrive here overnight. Of course *right before* I was going to take down the outdoor decorations. Looks like they may be partially taken down by wind. Ok, so maybe that’s not so bad – saves me some work 😉 (Back to original post):

Yesterday was lovely really even though I had to go to work. SB went with me since it would be a short day due to his 2:00 baseball practice. He is so good with me at work! He actually spent about an hour doing filing for me. Then he asked questions about what he was filing and watching me as I generated more entries – and paperwork! He totally ‘got it’ too. I love how easily he learns and how well he listens when he is curious. We also had a great conversation and Q&A about the presidential primary process. I showed him the primary calendar that I’d found and he watched the Iowa returns with me for awhile. It was great that he had a 3 hour practice – they so needed to get out there after 2 weeks of vacation. I got to get another walk in and then just sit and enjoy watching them for awhile. We had a quick dinner out with MM and SP (no way was I cooking last night!) and then I got to play with my new pedaling machine. Dang, does that thing work! While I was pedaling it didn’t seem too hard, but after 10 mins I had to step off to answer the phone and realized that my leg muscles were burning! NICE! Oh, and it was really awesome how people called, or emailed, or texted or left messages here. Thanks everyone!! I even had a message totally from out of the blue from an old teacher of mine. I can’t believe she remembered!

I found a fun new site this morning while surfing for reactions from Iowa and I added it to my blogroll. The author, Brandy, lives in Canada so cannot vote but is watching our process with great interest as I imagine that other countries do. What was it that Chris Matthews called us last night? The 800lb gorilla in the world? Something like that – he was making the point about the international splash that was made with the Obama/Huckabee victory last night. Anyway, Brandy said something that made so much sense to me. She talked of how we should TALK about politics. Not shy away from it. How your views convey so much about who you are. Thank you for saying that Brandy! I completely agree! And I have been guilty of suppressing myself a bit. Especially at home. Not with MusicMan so much, as I have talked with him now and then about things and I made sure he registered to vote and that he DID vote in ’04. But with SportsBoy I have been more reticent. His dad and all his dad’s friends/associates are strongly GOP (as are my parents) and I don’t want to appear to be brainwashing SB. On the contrary, I want to just teach him the process and ABOUT the issues without any bias so that he can make up his own mind. But, as I said, he is a curious creature by nature and asks millions of questions all the time and since I am having so much fun learning about this process myself, I had fun sharing that with him last night. He’s smart – he knows about bias! At one point I was refreshing a page on DailyKos that had the Iowa results. It showed two sections: Good Guys & Bad Guys 🙂 Sportsboy saw that and asked about it and I told him that DailyKos is a Democratic blog so the writer was just having some fun. He said “So, there is a bias” Yes!! So we talked about that for a bit – how you always need to know the motivation behind WHO is writing something. Anyway, I want him to know that I am politically aware and active so I will continue to talk to him about it – great year for the education process for sure! And if he understands a little better about the things that are important to me – even better.
