As you can tell by the score – the opening day game was a huge success! So much so that our team was ordered to stop scoring. My little ball carrier did not know yet that we were not supposed to score anymore – we got those four touchdowns by mid-way through the 2nd quarter and I guess the rule is no more than 28 points. He got the ball on offense and had an amazing run up the sideline – ran over a couple of guys shaking them off his shoulders – only to find out that the run was being called back due to a penalty. Otherwise he had a touchdown!! Oh man did we scream…and then got real quiet. Darnit! Then we found out that it was GOOD that it was called back because otherwise our coach would have been suspended for next week’s game! Darn mercy rule. So our team played the whole second half on sctrict orders to simply run out of bounds or fall on the ball. No more scoring. Of course, coach still didn’t want us to let THEM score since he “pays” the kids for shutouts with ice cream! At any rate, it was lots of fun. Next week will NOT be as easy – we play our rivals up the road and it gets very serious. The team we play next week had two camera guys filming our game today. One filming offense and one filming defense. Our own head coach bought the boys their ice cream treat and then took off to go watch next week’s team play their game. And he’s going in disguise!!!
It just seems totally ironic that we take things seriously enough to have secret playbooks and to send scouts to watch opponents play, yet we are not allowed to get ahead by more than 28 points!!
It’s hot – and I need to work in the yard. Ugh. Hurricane John which hit the Baja area is sending humidity up here – possibly even rain on Monday. Figures another heat wave would hit on the weekend I have time to catch up on yard work.
