Short weekend report

Still tired from the weekend, so here’s a quick rundown. Saturday was an undefeated day. Won the football game and then both baseball games which earned the team a bye for the morning rounds and the #1 seed in the semi-final game Sunday at 1:00pm.
So we took the time Sunday after breakfast to head out to the old house. It was so weird! You know how there are events which happen in our lifetime that we always remember where we were when they happened? Well, for whatever reason the first such event in my lifetime which stuck with me was the reporting of Elvis’ death. My mom was driving the car, I was in the backseat and we were just about to turn into the back entrance of our neighborhood. So on Sunday as I approached the “main” entrance, I was suddenly struck with a total deja vous moment. Sure enough – there was the left turn lane into the back entrance because I looked up and saw the Arco gas station on the corner for the main one. Whoa. The surrounding neighborhood has totally become Little Vietnam. There was actually a market called Saigon Market and a strip mall called Little Saigon Marketplace. There were also election signs all over with two names – Ngyuen (R) and Sanchez (D). That cracked me up since it just was reported that the Ngyuen campaign was being investigated for sending out mailers to voters with Latin surnames with an attempt to scare them away from the polls over immigration status. Oh great – my current district WAS represented by Duke Cunningham and my childhood district has this controversial campaigning going on. Too funny. Anyway, while the surrounding area has changed a lot, there was the same Arco gas station on the corner, and then the neighborhood looked totally the same! I turned down one street and there we were. Surrounded by the houses that I saw every day of my life for nearly 17 years. I rode my bike and rollerskated up and down that street so many times! There was this one rather unsightly two story black and white house – and it was still the same!! Then, we were there. Third house on the right as the street curves around. Of all the things – my old house is THE one that has been changed! Totally re-roofed and re-landscaped out front so that if the house number was not on it, I would never have recognized it.

I loved that driveway on the right there. Nice and long with a gentle slope – great for rolling around on either the bike or skates. The change on the house is the pitched tile roof. This used to have one of those not so well thought out totally flat roofs. IOW – it leaked like a sieve after awhile! The step stones and pillars and raised bed are all new. The gate actually leads into a courtyard entrance. My bedroom window opened into that. No one was home so I couldn’t try to see inside. I may try again though – another tournament in early December could also be at Mile Square Park.
The team lost their semi-final game so we got home around 4:00pm. DS2 did have two awesome diving catches though. Totally showing off his football skills by giving up his body for the catch.
Still so tired though. Didn’t sleep well at all in the motel bed and I think I was over-caffienated last night as I couldn’t get to sleep until nearly midnight. Nighty night!
