Field Trip Report

I try to make it to at least one field trip a year for DS2 and today was the day. They have been preparing for many weeks to go to Junior Achievement’s Biz Town. Construction was just completed two weeks ago and DS2’s school was only the 5th to use it. We were technically a pilot group helping them to work out the kinks. I had to be there at 7:30am to participate in a 90 minute training for parent volunteers. I was assigned to Kaiser Permanente. DS2 was Washington Mutual’s CEO! I was so proud of him. All dressed up in a button down shirt with a tie (he came from his dad’s today thank heavens!!). He had to give a speech at the first town hall meeting to introduce his business and then another at the end to give a financial report. The goal for each company was to pay off it’s initial business loan and to keep their checking accounts in a positive balance. Parents were supposed to just be there to get them going and then to step back and watch. That was so hard for me!!! Especially with the CFO – I was always keeping an eye on how he kept the books and making sure he met payroll and made bank deposits! My natural instincts taking over dontcha know! Still, the kids were well prepared and I was so impressed for instance with one of the ‘doctors’. He took his job so seriously and did a wonderful job. I heard that DS2 did a great job running one of the two banks. He observed how hard it was to be a CEO!! He had to cover for the CFO and Tellers when they went on break. They rotated the kids on breaks so that they could deposit their paychecks and then go spend at the various vendors. It was really well done and to me the kids did great and DS2 and his friend who came home with us both gave it rave reviews. Though DS2 did say he would not apply to be the CEO to a bank again!! 🙂

  1. We have the same program here, and it’s amazing what the kids learn and how well they are able to run their businesses. I’m glad it was a good day and that you were able to make it.
