Like using contraception? Don’t vote Republican*

* stolen from MissLaura, @ DailyKos. As is all of this below. Personally, whether sexually active or not, I will take the pill until menopause because it does such a fabulous job of regulating my cycles and preventing PMS symptoms. That’s right, I take it NOT as birth control, but as a health aid. While I firmly understand and respect people who are opposed to abortion (though that is not my stance), I am utterly disgusted with people wanting to control every single aspect of the decisions I make about my body and my reproductive cycle. Access to birth control *prevents* abortions! How can they be so blinded by faith not to see the reality of that? More from MissLaura:

This is the real agenda of anti-abortion groups:

Eighty six anti-abortion groups have committed to opposing all forms of contraception. Among the groups are Right to Life of Kansas, Pro-Life Ohio, the Life League of New Mexico, North Dakota Right to Life, Connecticut Right to Life, California Right to Life, and the Delaware Pro-life Coalition. However, few of these state’s media outlets are covering the groups’ opposition to contraception–no matter how eager the groups are to display their extreme agenda. Thus the public doesn’t know that their elected officials are pandering to anti-birth control forces in order to secure these groups’ support. Yet these groups and their unpopular and dangerous agenda escape notice. Because of this, we’ll wake up one day to discover that almost half the candidates running for president are opposed to contraception. Maybe tomorrow?

Now go read her entire post here to see which candidates are pandering to this crowd. I know I have a few Republican readers. Some who are pro-life. But I also know that my friends who are pro-life are also pro-contraception and would most likely be appalled at this. I am pro-choice all around which means that if *you* choose to abstain from sex, and use natural family planning as your means of birth control – way to go!! I support that choice whole heartedly. But please, give me the same respect for my personal choices – and the freedom to make those choices. Nothing irks me more than hearing about insurance plans that deny access to the pill, or pharmacies that refuse to fill prescriptions. Hmmmm…are those same companies denying coverage or access to Viagra??? Of course not.

OK, political outrage rant off . We will return to our regularly scheduled boring updates on cats and kids tomorrow šŸ™‚

  1. I read this earlier today, and became absolutely livid!! I mean, I know that this way of thinking is out there, but it still pisses me off to no end. Stay out of my bedroom, my private life, my health decisions. Stay the f*** OUT!

It’s about control of women, many times. About not allowing women to enjoy their bodies. About attempting to punish women for having sex, never mind those who may exactly ENJOY it, horror of horrors! About not “allowing” women to be in control of their bodies. Hello? Who else should be in control? Not the government, that’s for sure. No one else but me. End of story.

Thank you for letting me rant. šŸ™‚

  2. From the article you linked to …

    > And Mr. McCain reports that his adviser on
    > sexual-health matters is Sen. Tom Coburn,
    > Republican of Oklahoma, who leads campaigns
    > claiming condoms are unsafe and opposing
    > emergency contraception.

Dear Mr. Coburn, I do believe that we could prove that condoms are a HECK of a lot safer than illegal abortions.

Have you forgotten the Southern Democrats???? As both a Republican and someone who is strongly pro-choice and pro birth control (of all kinds) I do not see those as inconsistent. Rudy Guiliani is pro choice and HE is probably going to be the GOP nominee. Just because there are some republicans who are pandering to the (Democrat and Republican) anti-choice/anti-sex fringe doesn’t mean that you should condemn the party of fully 1/2 of the USA. If you want bigger government and more taxes vote for Democrats. If you want lower taxes and lip service and sometimes actions to smaller government vote Republican. Also remember that there are Democrats that pander to that same anti-sex crowd. Don’t vote for the panderers.

  4. Cricket – The point here is that you need to educate yourself. Don’t turn a blind eye to the extremes that the pro-life crowd can advocate. President’s appoint Supreme Court Justices. That is very crucial to this issue. No matter where anyone stands individually, nearly every politician toes the party line when it comes time to vote on a bill or appoint or approve a judge. See Harry Reid – a personally pro-life Democrat who still always votes pro-choice in the Senate. The Republican party has within the past 20 years become VERY dependent on the financial and vocal support of the extreme pro-life groups. I think they are getting the picture that they need to move away, but it is not going to happen overnight and certainly not within this current election cycle. Do not be naive about that. It is that faction of support that provided the final push for me away from the GOP.
