Last night I was watching World Report on HDNet. If you do have HD channels you have to check out their programs. Wonderful reporting on locations all over the world with some just stunning camera work. Dan Rather has an hour long weekly program on it too and I just love seeing him regularly again. Yes, even in HD 🙂 This week’s report had a segment on Iraq war veterans. They spliced back and forth between interviews with 5 different soldiers as they told the stories of what they experienced there. Listening to them tell of their experiences, you had no idea where they stood on the occupation of Iraq until the very end when they revealed two who are part of an organization supporting the war and three who are now anti-war protesters. Here were 5 men who pretty much experienced the same exact thing over the same periods of time (all 5 had been there between 2003-05). Yet, look how divergent their interpretations of the events are. All 5 had joined the armed services well before 9/11 so war was really never on the horizon when they enlisted. It just fascinates me how people can walk down the same paths and yet tell completely different tales about what they saw. To me, this is what is meant when you say the personal is political and vice versa. We will always argue and debate. We will often agree on *what* is wrong, but rarely agree on how to fix it. Fun stuff ;-> Well, fun if, now and then, someone gets to at least TRY their way to see if it works. Constant debate and stagnation certainly is useless to everyone!
On a lighter example, I read some reviews of what is one of my favorite places to grab sushi. Now, I do not think myself a sushi expert by a long run. In fact, I’ve only learned to enjoy it within the last 5 years. However, I do know that I had some really *bad* sushi in Las Vegas once. For me, it was about the consistency of the rice. Dry and too chewy and..ew!!! Well, SP has taken me to a couple of very good places. Heck, I even like the sushi that my local grocery store sells – it’s made fresh every day and you can tell. Once thing I do know is that is has to be made fresh – it cannot sit for very long at all before it loses consistency. OK, that is the extent of my expertise! Anyhow, I found this place called Gami Sushi which is in the shopping center right next to my house. They brilliantly offered 1/2 price rolls during their first month or so of business and now have ‘happy hour’ every Mon-Thurs from 4:30-6:30 when certain rolls are still 1/2 price. SP and I love it. HE thinks the sushi there is great and I would consider him to be much more picky than I am. So check out these reviews.
They could not be more different from my opinion!! I’ve been there over a dozen times now. At least 5 times I sat inside and waited for my order. I witnessed nothing like these people described! And, can someone please tell me why it matters that the staff are Korean??? Vs?? Are you implying that only Japanese can work at a sushi restaurant? Tell me people, have you not noticed that the cooks in nearly every restaurant in San Diego are Mexican no matter what type of cuisine is being served?? Yeesh! I order custom made rolls each time since I do not like avocado without a single complaint from the staff. And this afternoon I spoke with Mr Kim himself who is the main chef and also the owner from the pictures I can see behind the register. Yeah, no issues with my no avo orders. Obviously I am not saying these people are lying, but again, it’s just so fascinating how differently they exact same thing can be viewed.Â
Makes life exciting doncha think?
HEY — in any business you have the type of people that are “supposed” to work there. Really we had a bad year last year in the tax office and I think it was partly because we didn’t have a 50+ year old balding guy working for us.
It’s kind of funny — when I go to restaurants, and especially ethnic restaurants, I notice what kind of people eat there (are there Chinese people eating at the Chinese restaurant? If not why not?) but I never notice what kind of people work there. That doesn’t seem as important somehow.
