I realize that there may be only one person following my American Idol commentary (hi bud!) but this is also a bit of a personal experiment which will make watching the show more fun for me. I want to look back when it is all over and see what I originally thought of the eventual winner. Plus it’s a way for my remote friends and I to compare notes since we cannot watch together in the same room. So the rest of you please bear with me 🙂
OK, top 12 guys. 60s night.
David Hernandez. Not wowed. Though I know he has a powerful voice and he showed it well. Not sure about his performance though. Nerves I think. Hard to be the first one to perform, but he has to prove himself. No vote.
Chikezie Ezie. How did I miss that he had been cut in Hollywood last season? I had no idea he was a repeat participant. Good for him! Ok, the moment he starts singing I see why he was cut last year. Oh dear lord. The middle of the song is much better, but boy did that start out rough!! Not liking the red leisure suit either. Those things can (please) stay OUT of fashion IMHO! No vote.

David Cooke. The David with the rocker sound and streaked hair…wait..where is the red streak? It’s gone! Oh wow, he is singing Happy Together so well! Keeping that rocker edge and a great stage presence. First one to earn my vote.

Jason Yeager. He still *does* have a blonde streak in his hair. Ok, winning my heart with the scenes with his son. Moon River..oh no..can’t think of this song without some very immature snickers (thanks a ton Stormy & IPP!). Anyway, I’m bored by his performance. Nothing special there. Not voting.

Robbie Carrico. Sports Boy’s favorite. Another rocker with long blond hair and often wearing a knit beanie. Ok, he has my vote from the first few notes he hit! Oh I do love this guy’s voice! You can tell that he has the range and skills to sing any style. Yes, rock is his natural genre, but he can pull off anything. What a fun, driving version of One is the Loneliest Number!
David Archuletta. 17 year old already known as the phenom of the early rounds. Rightfully so. I love the way he gets into a song. Such control to his voice. Great performer. Oh yes, this one is going to go FAR. Got my vote. Yes CSM, he is utterly adorable. Charming and cute and with a winning personality and smile.

Danny Noriega. Another big voice – they really do have some awesome vocal talent this year. Jailhouse Rock – would not have thought of that song for him. He’s a natural performer. Tons of personality and style. Now, his down side is that he is a little TOO on. I can see myself being annoyed by him after too long. In fact, I already am! No vote.
Luke Menard – Another repeat contestant. I love these people who show so much determination and guts to come back after being cut in previous seasons. Major respect to them right away. Too bad I am not being amazed by his performance at first. After some very powerful vocal talents, his voice is nice. Sweet. But a little thin. Also, though he has the pretty boy looks, I am not sure he is a great performer. No vote.
Colton Berry – The Ellen Degeneres look-alike. He is so right about that! Pretty good performer too. I like his voice. He had fun and it showed. And yet…I will sound like Simon and say that it was a bit too cabaret 🙂 No vote.

Garrett Hailey – Leif Garret/Peter Frampton look alike. As they mentioned, we have not seen much of him in the early rounds so tonight is kind of an introduction to him. Ok, I know that slow songs show vocal skills, and his are OK. Not great, but OK. He does have a cool tone to his voice that I like. But man, those slow songs..well..they are slow!! Boring really until the end when they can hopefully show some range. This one is nice, but not memorable. No vote.

Jason Castro – dreadlock boy. Gorgeous blue eyes. Not sure about that hair thing though. Hmmm..it just hit me that he looks a bit like John Travolta. A little bit shy. Oh, I like him! Really puts himself into a song. Original. Memorable. Got my vote.

Michael Johns – Aussie. My favorite guy from day one. Oh yeah. The Doors! Light my Fire. Now THIS is a great song selection from the 60s. You know, he does have a little Jim Morrison thing going on. Wow. Got my vote.
There you have it. Forgot to mention that I would be free form writing while they sang and that I wont be covering the judges all that much. For a much more in depth analysis with a lot more style and up to date cultural references, check out Greeblemonkey 🙂
I voted for David C, David A, Robbie, Jason C and Michael.
I predict that Garret goes for sure. The other one is harder..perhaps the other Jason, or maybe Luke. Thought I HOPE it is Chikezie orDanny!
My favorites were David A, Jason C, and Michael. I pretty much agree you with on all counts.
It’s funny but I can’t remember what Luke performed. Is he the one Simon said was forgettable??
Have you seen any of the stories about the the three ringers? I saw a brief blurb on the news and keep forgetting to look it up. Apparently three of the top 24 have already had record contracts (the Irish woman — can’t remember her name; David A; and Michael).

Ooh, I did indeed hear about the controversy about Carly. That disappoints me since I loved her from the start. I was going to address it in my write up about the gals on Friday. Yes, that write up will be posted after the kick off because I have those damn meetings!! I’ll watch my DVR of the gals tomorrow at dinner.
