To do To do To do To do To do*

While sitting at my parent’s desk doing their taxes last week, I noticed that my dad keeps a classic To Do list for each day. He has a notepad with a list of numbered lines with the title “To do for today” or something similar. A great organizational tool to be sure. I know SweetPrince keeps lists like that particularly for his manic weekends of chores. For some reason I have never consistently had a task list. Neither at work or home. Sometimes, if I am feeling particularly overwhelmed with too many things smashing together into one looming deadline, I might parse it all out with a numbered list to feel better about everything. I have a very basic to do list at work for monthly deadlines and some tax filings. Of course I have all the major, ongoing events set up in my google calendar which I can view on my phone, but I am not talking about LL games and such. I am talking about tasks that are purely mine such as “backing up all digital photos to Flickr” or “plant seeds” or “watch Netflix movies” or “clip cats nails” or….well, aren’t those just so darn exciting? But you know what I mean, they are not typical routine chores, but just stuff that you know you should DO. And yes, sometimes I will put something fun like the movie watching thing on my mental list because really they do need to be watched because they are simply gathering dust in the tv cabinet while the monthly Netflix fee goes ca-ching ca-ching out of my account. Yet somehow the list never gets DONE! And it is that list whether in your head or on paper that prevents you from truly relaxing and allowing yourself to just read a book all day. And adding “read a book” does not work either. Now I have “play the piano” on my mental list of relaxing things I should be DOING.

I guess it beats the alternative really. Or maybe this musing is just an indication that I really #$%^ing need a vacation. Where I can relax. And do only the fun things on my list 🙂

  1. Dee – you will see that I am an obsessive decorator – on the internet 🙂 I’d love to have the time and money to rotate seasonal decor in my house and I DO have fun with fall colors in my house, but the rest of the year my decorating is limited to my computer settings. Thanks for noticing – I was going for a Spring look.
