If he had not won me over last month, the speech that Barack Obama just gave in South Carolina would have done it. I had chills and tears and then cheers at the end saying “Yes We Can” with him. He has really got something going here and as we face the final State of the Union address from George W Bush (whew!!), a speech which I have loathed to watch for 8 long years, all I could think was that listening to a SOTU from Barack Obama next year would make me so proud.
Numbers for the state heads (me): GOP votes in SC one week ago totaled 443,000. With 99% reporting tonight, 531,000 Democrats voted. 231,000 more than in ’04. Double the number of black voters. Obama gets people off their butts and into the voting booths. He got more votes today than the top two GOP contenders from last weekend. Honestly, if this race inspires more participation than we usually see, then it will be positive for the country because to me, I fear apathy more than anything else.

Thankfully, and still hopefully, I think apathy will not be a factor this year. I am very encouraged by the numbers, the turnout of the Dems vs. Repubs in the primaries. I can only think that is a good thing. I’ve got my preferences, for sure, but I’m out to vote for the D. that gets the endorsement. And I hope to Goddess that that is the case nationwide.

DH saw one of his secret service friends on TV last night. Seriously! After the speech, when Obama was walking through the crowd, there’s a kind of short, white bald guy literally pressed up against his back (there’s also a taller black bald guy he didn’t recognize)……he said that he was one of the agents at the hotel and DH talked to him. And they were all wearing suits just like his .
