Book 3 of 52 a little fiction this time.

The Deadly Trade: A Novel The Deadly Trade: A Novel by Ken Morris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Fun, easy read. For some reason I just love books with short chapters. Probably because I often only have 30 mins to read and I know I can always make it through the end of a chapter.

I think I referred to Morris as writing in a vein similar to John Grisham but using the finance world as his setting instead. That’s perhaps not a fair comparison because Grisham explores his characters much more and weaves much, much more complicated tales (and much longer ones!). For that reason it’s actually easier to pick up something like The Deadly Trade because it is easy to follow while quite entertaining. There are enough plot twists to keep you guessing though not so many that you get lost. Set in San Diego makes it particularly easy for me to picture everything of course, especially since this one was focused pretty much on where my own little world of home & work exists 🙂

Bottom line – this wont expand your world or challenge you too much, but it is a very fun mystery to get into. Recommended for some light reading as a vacation from deeper fare.

And now I am on to some heavier non-fiction reading again. I like to alternate the genres. Also, yes, I may at certain points in this reading challenge get ahead of a one book a week pace, but I know that there will be weeks I will fall behind or that I have a book on my shelf that will certainly take longer. My goal is really a minimum of 52 for the year so there will be no pressure if my pace fluctuates 🙂

  1. I like books with good “stopping places” too. Short chapters. Letters. Short. Short. Short.

This one sounds like a nice light one, too. Not sure I’ll pick it up, but you never know.

If you haven’t already read it, I highly recommend True Compass: A Memoir by Edward M. Kennedy. Amazing memoir. In fact it’s much more than a memoir.

    1. Thanks! It will be on my To Read list in the spring. Gotta get through the existing pile before I add new ones. Some of the book I have date back to a 2002 acquisition date! Aack! This one sat on my shelf at least 3 years. I’ll be happy to send my copy to you. I’m just going to donate it anyway. Email me your addy.

  2. I didn’t used to like books with short chapters but I’m beginning to appreciate them a bit more now that I’ve decided to try to fit in more reading time.
